Washington Hospital for Foundlings (16)

Bethesda, Maryland
Constructed in 1899/1900, demolished

Cluss's last work was a summer house in Bethesda, Maryland, for the Washington Hospital for Foundlings. Cluss did not charge for his services.

Washington's summer heat made life in an orphanage especially unconfortable, but, in an era when everyone opened windows in the summer, neighbors of the Washington Hospital for Foundlings frequently complained about the sound of crying babies waking them in the night. In the 1890s, the orphanage began a subscription campaign to fund a summer home, both to benefit the children and to placate the neighbors.
